Aging gracefully and aging mindfully are doable when you take control of your life. And one way I’m doing that is by resetting and moving my body.

The most I have weighed in my life is 140 and with a VERY SMALL frame “5.0”, 5 lbs extra not only looks like but FEELS too much to carry. So imagine 20. I’m talking heavy breathing climbing the stairs to my apt and palpitations first thing in the morning. I don’t weigh myself regularly, but I can always tell when I’m overweight based on how I feel.

I’m foggy-minded, I lack energy and focus, and generally feel like crap. On March 22 this year “2021”, I decided to reset my body. And lord knows there was so much more resetting to come as I explain in this post. I intended to get myself back to my ideal weight of 110-120 by December ANDDDDDD maintain it.

But for me is not only about losing weight. It’s about maintaining a healthy body as I get older. My goal is to ensure that I age gracefully because it’s one of the few things I value very much.

However, one of the biggest challenges IN MY LIFE had been eating regularly, on time, the right foods, and I would resort to mostly quick pasta or a take-out. I NEVER seemed to have a healthy appetite since I was 13 and smoothies were my mother’s go-to way of making sure I ate something. Even my sisters would ask “do you want food BEFORE cooking – we didn’t have to waste it. Surprisingly I never felt ill, I was a track athlete till 18, and I’ve always enjoyed moving my body as a teen and into my early 20s.

In my 30s, I FINALLY developed a healthier appetite by putting reminders in my google calendar to eat at a certain time, and move at a certain time, because the truth is I need more nutrition and energy now than I did then.

Aging gracefully -moving my body

My 12-year-old niece said working out looks painful… wait till she gets to my age. She’s right though. It’s one of the hardest things I’ve had to remain consistent with this year, but it’s taught me a bit of discipline & NOW I’m beginning to enjoy it more. For the first few months getting consistent was a major challenge. I just wanted to rest. ?

Now that I have a more dedicated reason to stay consistent it’s no longer a goal of mine but a lifestyle choice.

Since August I’ve shown up no less than 3 times a week doing mostly cardio to drop off the excess body fat and recently added strength and toning.

Today, I’m at my almost ideal 126 lbs. Most of which was lost between August and now, but my biggest attribute would be FOOD.

I’ve understood more about what works for my body and what doesn’t. I can work out every day but consume sugar in the form of snacks, sodium, simple carbs, coffee, and wine and NOTHING WILL CHANGE. I’m currently resetting my body and metabolism WHILST replacing my once-go-to’s with healthier alternatives.

But by eliminating these three ‘most of the time- I love a good sourdough cookie from a local artisan bakery and adding more fruits and vegetables and beans to my diet, I can honestly say that I’ve never felt better.

My goal for this year was to simply stay on track with not just weight loss but defining a healthier body and lifestyle. I can honestly say that I’m halfway there.

The set I’m wearing is from Fabletics but sold out, but here are a few of my other favs.

I’m more mindful of what I eat, and how I eat, and move my body consistently. Right now I’m learning more about nutrition, I’ve become one of these ppl you will find reading the labels at the supermarket, and even though my grocery bill has tripled, my body is healing. That is my ultimate reason. As a plus, adding more movement has helped with clarity, feeling more relaxed, and of course, increased my energy.
